Nigeria (Common Wealth) _ According to the EF English Proficiency Index, Nigeria ranks third in Africa and 28th internationally. The Nation discovered that the rating was for non-native English speaking countries.
The list, which was announced in November 2022, included twenty African countries, with South Africa ranking 12th globally and first in Africa, and Kenya ranking 20th globally and second in Africa. Other African countries on the list include Ghana (41st globally and 4th in Africa), Uganda (55th globally and 5th in Africa), and others.
After Chinese, English is the world’s second most widely spoken language. It is spoken by 372 million native speakers and around a billion non-native speakers. About 64% of native English speakers live in the United States, 16.6% in the United Kingdom, 5.3% in Canada, 4.7% in Australia, 1.3% in South Africa, 1.3% in Ireland, 1.3% in New Zealand, and the rest 5.5% live elsewhere. In Africa, there are around 6.5 million native English speakers and 700 million non-native English speakers.
English is an official language in over two dozen African countries. Except for Rwanda and Eritrea, which were colonized by Belgium and Italy, the majority of these countries where English is spoken are former British colonies. Sierra Leone and Liberia are the two African countries where English is the primary language. Although English is the primary language of both Nigeria and Ghana, it is also used as a lingua franca in both countries.
Nigeria (198 million), Ethiopia (110 million), South Africa (58 million), Tanzania (60 million), and Kenya (50 million) are the largest English-speaking countries in Africa. This does not imply that everyone in the country can write or speak English. According to the World Linguistic Society, Uganda is the best English-speaking country on the African continent. Zambia, South Africa, and Kenya are listed in that order.
All of these countries were former British colonies, and English is recognized as the official language. Although English is the official language in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, Swahili is the most widely spoken? Rwanda recognizes both French and English as official languages, but the government encourages the use of English in schools to align with the rest of the East African bloc.
The Commonwealth includes the majority, if not all, of the former British possessions in Africa. When compared to other languages, English-speaking countries have stronger trade and social interactions. The majority of visitors who visit East Africa and immigrants who settle there are from English-speaking countries. English is also the African Union’s official language, and it is used at AU meetings.
The Netherlands is the world’s leading country, with Singapore coming in second. The Education First English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) strives to rank countries based on the equity of English language skills among people who have taken the EF test.
The EF EPI 2022 version was created using test data from 2.1 million people who took the exam in 2021. In the 2022 edition of the index, there are 111 countries and territories. A country must have at least 400 test takers in order to be included in the ranking.
