Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, along with the governments of the Netherlands and Denmark, launched a $1 billion green hydrogen fund aimed at combating climate change by supporting the development of the green hydrogen industry. South Africa’s energy transition plan involves establishing an export hub for green hydrogen that utilizes renewable energy while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.
During a business forum in Pretoria, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte praised South Africa’s potential to lead the fight against climate change due to its abundant renewable resources. He emphasized the Netherlands’ interest in becoming a strategic partner, not only in local development related to renewable energy, hydrogen, and infrastructure but also as a hub for hydrogen imports.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen echoed Rutte’s sentiments, expressing pride in Denmark’s partnership with South Africa’s just energy transition. Denmark pledged approximately R3.2 billion to improve green power supplies, enhance skills, create employment opportunities, and promote local development. Frederiksen emphasized the importance of aligning economic growth, climate change mitigation, and development.
President Ramaphosa welcomed the investments made by the Netherlands and Denmark in renewable energy, highlighting the mutually beneficial nature of the collaborations. He emphasized the significance of the discussions held during the visit, showcasing the opportunities available in South Africa and facilitating direct exchanges to enhance collaboration.
Ramaphosa also took the opportunity to address his recent visits to Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of ending the war. He emphasized the consensus reached among the leaders regarding the necessity for the war to conclude, preferably through negotiations. South Africa aims to produce hydrogen for various sectors such as aviation, green steel, and transportation, as well as for export to the European Union. This ambitious plan aligns with the country’s goal of leveraging its renewable resources and reducing carbon emissions in the pursuit of sustainable development.
