Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ In a bold move to expand school infrastructure in Nigeria’s Southeast, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law three landmark bills sponsored by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu. The bills create three new federal institutions: the Federal College of Education, Bende; the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item; and the Federal University, Okigwe.
The signing of these bills represents a significant step towards filling the void in the region for high-quality higher education, skill enhancement, and health-related training.
The Federal College of Education, Bende, Abia State, will be opened to provide full-scale training in a broad spectrum of disciplines. Ranging from technology and applied sciences to commerce, humanities, and social sciences, the college will provide full-time academic and vocational training. It will also spearhead research activities aimed at modifying present approaches to meet local needs while securing rigorous standards in administration and discipline among students.
In addition to this, the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item, will dedicate itself to enhancing medical education. With the provision of both undergraduate and postgraduate education, the university will offer a hub for advanced research in medicine, health policy, and delivery of services with the hope of filling gaps in the nation’s health system and improving community health.
The Federal University, Okigwe, Imo State, will also ensure academic greatness and pioneer research innovation, further positioning the Southeast as a thriving center of intellectual and scientific growth.
In appreciation of the development, Hon. Kalu appreciated President Tinubu in a grateful manner for his rapid response and the National Assembly and citizens of Nigeria for their support. He maintained that the opening of these institutions is not only a morale booster for education but also a pillar of regional prosperity, empowerment, and opportunity.
“This is a win for our work to promote education in the South East,” Kalu declared. “It’s an indication of a leadership that hears and delivers.”
Encouraging the people in the region to strongly mobilize behind Tinubu’s government, he assured them more transformation projects are on the way.
These new institutions are bringing the Southeast closer to an era of increasing educational equality, professional growth, and social progress, demonstrating the potential of progressive legislative efforts to shape the future.
