AFRICA ( Commonwealth Union) _ Toyota South Africa Motors is planning to introduce a hybrid version of the Hilux as part of its new energy vehicle direction. The hybrid models will be limited to mild hybrids and align with the automaker’s global strategy.
However, this announcement was made during a visit to the Prospection Mother factory for Africa by Hiroki Nakajima, Executive Vice President for Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), who came to announce a new Global and Regional Policy. Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) was the first affiliate outside of Japan to receive this regional visit following recent organizational changes and policy announcements by TMC President, Koji Sato.
During a roundtable gathering with local TSAM executives, it was confirmed that a hybrid Hilux and Fortuner would be added to the local line-up.
Moreover, these models are expected to be introduced next year as mild hybrid variants. While no further details were disclosed, this aligns with Toyota’s New Management Policy & Direction announcement. Toyota has chosen a “multi-pathway approach” to New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and conventional models, rather than focusing solely on electrification. This approach aims to tailor products to specific market needs, with South Africa falling under the Global South Market, which includes emerging markets in Africa, South America, and Asia.
Nakajima emphasized that the Mobility Society vision aims to enhance the value of cars, expand mobility options, and provide new services and energy solutions as part of the Toyota Mobility Concept.
Toyota remains committed to its multi-pathway approach, adapting electrification strategies to meet the needs of customers and regions, leveraging the strengths and characteristics of each vehicle type. The focus of these hybrid models will be on quality, durability, and reliability, with an emphasis on high quality and affordability to cater to buyers’ preferences.
