NARASPURA, India (CWBN)_ National Secretary of the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) Clifton D’Rozario accused the Indian government of ignoring labour violations at the Karnataka iPhone factory following recent revelations that employees at the plant had not been paid for months. A riot at the factory, which is operated by Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron, led to global awareness regarding the issue.
D’Rozario stated that the state government was being “extremely soft” on Wistron and accused the government of ignoring labour violations which took place at the facility. D’Rozario made these comments at a media briefing, where he also questioned what purpose employment in such conditions served.
Multinational technology giant Apple Inc previously stated on Monday (December 15) that they were investigating the riot to determine if Wistron was at fault. Rioters caused extensive property damage amounting close to 440 crore (around 60 million USD), reportedly smashing cars and golf carts, stealing electronic devices and destroying office equipment.
Labour and employment conditions in India are already under the microscope following the Indian farmers’ protest, which highlighted the severe economic hardships faced by the farmers, many of whom even commit suicide due to insurmountable debt. Experts feel that the harsh working conditions at the factory which were highlighted this week are likely to cause India sharp losses in foreign investment.
The Karnataka government, under whose jurisdiction the factory falls, are reported to have stated that they are investigating the incident, and that they have already arrested several people in connection with the property damage. It remains unclear, however, what action they will be taking with regards to the labour violations which caused the employees to riot – the government is only reported to have stated that they will be seeking to help Wistron recommence operations and that they will be working to address worker grievances.
