Trump Paused Attacks on Iran – What Happens Next?

President Donald Trump has stopped attacks on Iran for a second night in a row. The goal is to give diplomatic talks more time to work. The US ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, spoke to Fox News on Sunday. An Iranian army spokesperson also confirmed a pause. He added that Trump is “giving it a little bit of room.”

An Iranian army spokesperson also confirmed a pause. He said Tehran had stopped its “retaliatory” attacks in the region. This pause comes after nearly two weeks of daily US strikes. There had also been ongoing attacks between both sides. This fighting had broken the ceasefire agreed upon in June.

Waltz was asked if Trump had ruled out more attacks. He said, “I wouldn’t go that far at all.” He explained that the president is “keeping all options on the table.” Waltz also pushed back on a New York Times report. That report claimed that officials were worried about low supplies of air-defence weapons. Waltz disagreed. He said the US military has “everything that it needs” for this campaign.

By Sunday evening, Trump had not spoken publicly about the pause. However, he did post AI-generated images on Truth Social. These images showed US planes bombing Iranian ships and Kharg Island. Meanwhile, Iran and Oman held talks in Tehran. These talks happened on Friday and Saturday. They focused on managing the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed the agreement. Disagreements over the strait restarted tensions between the US and Iran. It remains a major obstacle to ending the war for good. In June, Iran and the US had signed an agreement. It aimed to stop military action and reopen the strait. Both sides also agreed to try to end the war within 60 days.

But on July 13, Iranian forces attacked tankers in the strait. In response, the US resumed airstrikes. It also restarted its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Iran then struck US military bases across the Middle East. Four American soldiers were killed. Since then, US strikes have killed dozens of people, according to Iran’s health ministry.

In the UK, new Defence Secretary Wes Streeting spoke about the crisis. He said he’ll meet US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth soon. They plan to discuss the Strait of Hormuz. Streeting called the strait vital for global trade. He said the UK and US are “absolutely aligned” on keeping it open for shipping.

Oil prices recently hit $100 a barrel. This is the highest since May. Fears over global energy supplies are driving the increase. A new poll shows most Americans are unhappy with the conflict. Fifty-seven percent feel frustrated. Only nineteen percent feel optimistic. Trump is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday at the White House.
