Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Visa issuance between Canada and India may face delays due to recent tensions. The expulsion of 41 Canadian diplomats from India over alleged interference in domestic affairs has strained bilateral relations. While External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed hope for the resumption of visa services in Canada “very, very soon,” he also hinted at revealing instances of interference, potentially impacting the normalization of visa issuance. The tense relations may have a specific impact on the visa clearance process for Indian students, particularly those situated outside the National Capital Region. The geopolitical strains could lead to increased scrutiny or delays in visa approvals, potentially affecting the mobility and educational plans of students seeking to study in the affected regions.

Jaishankar emphasized the need for progress in the security scenario for Indian diplomats in Canada before resuming visa issuance. The revelations of interference, including the alleged issuance of travel documents to certain elements in India, could further impede the quick resumption of visa services at the Indian High Commission in Ottawa and other consulates. Canada, facing a smaller staff after the expulsions, is also likely to continue the suspension of in-person services at its consulates in India.

The impact is expected to be felt significantly in the clearance of visas for Indian students and emergency visits. The diplomatic spat between India and Canada, especially concerning Sikh separatists, has added complexity to the visa issuance process. Canada claims Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, while India accuses Canada of providing shelter to violent separatists and gangsters. The ongoing tensions may prolong delays in visa services and affect ordinary individuals in need of travel authorizations.
