Even if people brush their teeth every day, stains can still appear. This can happen because of genetics. It can also happen due to food and drinks like coffee, tea, and tomatoes. Many people use whitening products to fix this. These often contain strong chemicals. They can remove stains, but they may also harm the teeth.
Scientists are now trying to find a safer way. A new study describes a special whitening powder. It works with an electric toothbrush. The powder becomes active when the brush vibrates. Early tests show that it can whiten teeth and also protect them.
The research was published in the ACS Nano journal. The team wanted to create something simple for home use. Their goal was to make teeth whiter without causing damage. They also wanted to support overall oral health.
Most common whitening products use peroxide. This chemical creates reactive oxygen species, also called ROS. These substances break down the stains on teeth. This helps make teeth look whiter. However, ROS can also weaken tooth enamel. Enamel is the hard outer layer of the tooth. If it gets damaged, teeth can become sensitive. They can also stain again more easily.
The new powder works in a different way. It still produces ROS, but only when activated by movement. The movement comes from an electric toothbrush. This makes the process more controlled.
To make the powder, researchers used a mix of elements. These included strontium, calcium, and barium. They combined them with a material called barium titanate. Then they heated the mixture. This created a fine ceramic powder. They named it BSCT.
BSCT has a special property. When it is shaken or vibrated, it creates a tiny electric field. This is known as the piezoelectric effect. This small electric field helps trigger the reactions that produce ROS. These reactions help remove stains from teeth.
The team first tested the powder in the lab. They used real human teeth. The teeth were stained using tea and coffee. Then they brushed the teeth with the powder and an electric toothbrush.
After four hours, the teeth already looked whiter. After twelve hours, the results were even better. The treated teeth were nearly 50 percent whiter than the untreated ones. The control group was brushed with a simple salt solution and did not show the same improvement.
The researchers also looked at damaged teeth. Some teeth had weak enamel and dentin. Dentin is the layer under the enamel. When they used the BSCT powder, these layers started to recover. Minerals from the powder formed new deposits on the tooth surface. This helped repair the structure of the teeth.
Next, the scientists tested the powder on animals. They used rats that were given high-sugar diets. Such diets can harm oral health. The rats’ teeth were brushed with the powder for one minute each day. This continued for four weeks.
The results were promising. The treatment helped improve the balance of bacteria in the mouth. Harmful bacteria were reduced. These included types that can cause gum disease. Inflammation in the mouth also decreased.
This suggests that the powder may do more than just whiten teeth. It may also help protect against oral diseases. It could support a healthier mouth overall.
The product is still in the early stages. It has not yet been turned into a toothpaste. More testing is needed before it can be used by people at home. Safety and long-term effects must be carefully studied.
However, the early findings are encouraging. This new method could offer a safer option for whitening teeth. It may avoid the damage caused by strong chemicals. It could also help repair and protect teeth at the same time.
