India (Commonwealth Union)_ West Bengal is witnessing a significant political shift, as India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led at the national level by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is all set to come to power in the state for the first time. After years of dominance by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the election results point to a clear change in voter sentiment across the region. Accordingly, early and final election results show the BJP securing a clear majority in the 294-seat assembly. Initial trends placed the BJP ahead in 185 seats compared to the TMC’s 91, but the final tally strengthened its position further, with the party winning 207 seats.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has ruled West Bengal since 2011 under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was reduced to 80 seats, a major blow to the long-standing party. The results indicate a divided mandate across the state. BJP did well in border districts, tribal areas, and industrial belts, while TMC held on to its support in parts of Kolkata and some rural areas. However, the outcome represents a major political shift in a state that has long been considered difficult for the BJP to penetrate.

Banerjee, who has been one of the most prominent critics of Modi’s policies, alleged irregularities in the voting process and accused the Election Commission of favouring her opponents. She also claimed that there had been “loot of seats,” signaling strong disagreement with the outcome. The election followed a controversial voter roll revision known as a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), during which around 2.7 million names were removed from the electoral list. Critics argued that minority voters were disproportionately affected, a charge the government denied.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the result, saying it reflected the will of the people and praised what he called good governance. He added that West Bengal would now move toward progress without fear. The BJP also recorded wins in Assam and Puducherry, while the Congress party continued to struggle nationally. However, in Kerala, opposition forces managed to hold their ground, limiting the BJP’s expansion in the south. According to analysts, it could reshape national politics, strengthening the BJP’s grip in eastern India and intensifying the challenges for the opposition in the run-up to future state and national elections in the coming years regionally.
