CAPE TOWN (CU)_Over the recent months, the government of South Africa has launched several efforts to strengthen the country’s infrastructure development, particularly in rural areas, with the aim of bridging the urban-rural divide through infrastructure. This is one of the key focus areas of the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa (SIDSSA), which was hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday (7 October). 

Delivering his keynote address yesterday, the South African leader noted that with a rural population of around 18 million, an increase in fixed capital investment in rural areas has become vital in order to improve rural accessibility through the establishment of linkages to formal economic opportunities in urbanised areas.
