KUWAIT/ABU DHABI – June 2026: Given its increasing importance to collaborate on Gulf security issues, Kuwait and the UAE have reiterated their desire to continue building military relations, creating a new chapter for both our defense relationships that we have as neighbours, and partners in the region.
This was discussed during the meeting between President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE and the Chief of the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces Lieutenant General Khaled Darraj Al-Shuraian on 23 June 2026. Both leaders discussed issues regarding how they could further enhance military cooperation between Kuwait and the UAE through enhanced coordination for military operations; increased cooperation on defense strategies and development of new initiatives to respond to changing security dynamics throughout the region.
The recent discussions about military cooperation between the UAE and Kuwait are particularly relevant given the complex security issues currently facing both nations and the Gulf region in general. As such, defense specialists note that modern military partnerships now involve much more than traditional forces, including, cyber defense, intelligence sharing, maritime security, air and ground combat systems, and collective training.
The strong relationship between Kuwait and the UAE is based on decades of mutual trust. The UAE provided significant assistance to the Kuwaiti people by supporting their struggle against their aggressor, Iraq, during the Gulf War. The two nations have worked closely together to support the GCC’s goals and ultimately promote regional stability and support the concept of collective security.
Military joint activities and exchanges have demonstrated growing complexity in defense collaboration between both nations. Increasing collaboration will enhance capacity for operation and enhance the Gulf’s capability to respond to new threats.
In addition to mutual security, this partnership mirrors a common vision shared by both leaders – preserve peace and stability in the region, as well as build stronger political, economic, and strategic relationships. Analysts say that a strong military relationship also serves as the mechanism for establishing the foundation for a broader partnership between the countries, through confidence-building; establishing a basis for investment and ultimately for long-term development.
The Middle East is undergoing significant change and uncertainty. Kuwait and the UAE are committed to consolidating their alliance through this evolving period of uncertainty within the region. Their recent agreement highlights that maintaining peace and security throughout the Gulf requires cooperation, readiness and unity between nations.
Kuwait-UAE’s military relationship is seen by many to provide evidence that Kuwait-UAE are not only looking to strengthen their bilateral military relationship, but also as part of a larger regional effort to promote resilience and stability throughout an increasingly interconnected security environment.
