Who is the IMF going to haul next?

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) continues to contact with Pakistan’s crisis-ridden nation in order to prepare for a board meeting before the current finance program expires at the end of June, stated Nathan Porter, the IMF’s country director for Pakistan.

The board meeting on a review of the program would require prior staff-level approval; in Pakistan’s case, this would authorize $1.1 billion in financing as part of a $6.5 billion IMF package for the cash-strapped South Asian nation.

More than 100 days had passed since the most recent staff-level mission to Pakistan, which took place in November. Since at least 2008, this wait is the lengthiest yet.

IMF mission chief: “This engagement will focus on the restoration of proper foreign exchange market functioning, the passage of an FY24 budget consistent with program goals, and adequate financing.”

Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s finance minister, made it clear that Pakistan would give the fund details on its budget.

He said, according to Reuters, that he would like to see the budget, which is slated to be presented in early June, finished before the IMF’s 9th review as all of its requirements had already been met.

Dar said, “They have asked for some more things again, and we are ready to provide that as well,” in an interview with Geo TV. They claim that if you give us budget information, we willSend it their way.

He asserted that Pakistan would not profit if the IMF merged the 9th and 10th assessments of the bailout, adding, “We will not do it, (we) see this is (as) unfair.”

Porter generally argued that in order for Pakistan to achieve robust and inclusive private-led growth, “overcoming the present economic and financial challenges would require sustained policy efforts and reforms.”

Despite the IMF’s policy of not commenting on domestic politics, Porter expressed hope that, in light of Pakistan’s political upheaval, “a peaceful way forward is found in line with the Constitution and the rule of law.”
