Why are eligible Canadians given a “grocery rebate”? And who qualifies for the GST credit?

Commonwealth _Canada _ Today, eligible Canadians are set to receive a special payment referred to as the grocery rebate, aimed at mitigating the escalating grocery prices. The Liberal government pledged this payment in the spring budget as a measure to assist Canadians in dealing with the mounting food inflation. Alongside their regular GST credit payment, approximately 11 million Canadians will benefit from this supplementary financial support, as stated by the Canada Revenue Agency. The grocery rebate is expected to offer relief to households grappling with the rising cost of groceries, addressing the concerns and challenges faced by Canadians due to increasing food prices.

Families consisting of couples with two children can anticipate an additional financial boost of up to $467 through the grocery rebate. Single individuals without children can expect an average supplementary amount of $234, while seniors can receive an extra $225 on average. These figures highlight the varying degrees of support provided to different segments of the population. By disbursing these additional funds, the government aims to alleviate the burden of rising grocery costs for families, individuals, and seniors, enabling them to better manage their expenses and maintain their standard of living amidst the challenging circumstances of food inflation.

In an attempt to mitigate the impact of high inflation on low and modest-income families, the federal government implemented a similar payment last autumn. Although Canada’s inflation rate moderated to 3.4 percent in May, grocery prices have continued to surge rapidly, experiencing a staggering nine percent increase compared to the previous year.

Despite the slight slowdown in overall inflation, the persistent rise in grocery prices presents an ongoing challenge for Canadian households. Recognizing the pressing need to address this issue, the government’s provision of the grocery rebate serves as a response to the sustained escalation in food costs, aiming to offer vital support to families grappling with the financial strain of grocery shopping.
