India (Commonwealth Union)_ The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has entered into a strategic collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to establish a state-of-the-art research Centre of Excellence focused on ‘Fluid and Thermal Sciences.’ The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on November 11, 2024, aims to address critical thermal management challenges associated with spacecraft and launch vehicles. ISRO has committed an initial seed funding of Rs 1.84 crore to support the creation of the Centre and provide resources for its operations.

The Centre will serve as a pivotal research hub, spearheading innovative solutions to thermal management issues in spacecraft and launch vehicle systems. By leveraging the expertise of IIT Madras’ faculty, the Centre aims to tackle complex problems related to the design, analysis, and testing of various spacecraft components, which are vital for ensuring the success of space missions. The collaboration has the potential to bolster India’s space program and foster the nation’s increasing independence in space technologies.
The MoU was signed at IIT Madras by Professor Manu Santhanam, Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at IIT Madras, and Victor Joseph T, Director of the Directorate of Technology Development & Innovation (DTDI) at ISRO. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Project Coordinator Professor Arvind Pattamatta from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras, along with other senior officials from both institutions.

Key features of the collaboration
The collaboration outlines several key outcomes and research objectives, including:
- Thermal Management Research Hub: The Centre will act as the primary research facility for ISRO, dedicated to solving thermal management challenges encountered during the design and operation of spacecraft and launch vehicles.
- Seed Funding and Infrastructure: ISRO will provide an initial funding of Rs 1.84 crore to establish the Centre, covering essential infrastructure, equipment, and operational costs. Additional funding will be allocated for consumables, maintenance, and future research projects.
- Advanced Research Areas: The research at the Centre will focus on several high-priority areas critical to ISRO’s space missions, such as spacecraft thermal management, combustion instability in hybrid rockets, and cryogenic tank thermodynamics.

Professor Arvind Pattamatta, who serves as the Project Coordinator for the initiative, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This Centre of Excellence will create a unique interface between academia and industry. It will bring together ISRO’s engineers and IIT Madras researchers to jointly solve some of the most challenging thermal engineering problems in the space domain. Our aim is to significantly contribute to India’s space program and strengthen our technological self-reliance in space exploration.”
A long-standing partnership
The collaboration between IIT Madras and ISRO is not new. In fact, the two institutions have worked together on various projects for decades. In 1985, they established the ‘ISRO-IIT M Space Technology Cell’ to foster research and development in space technologies. The new Centre of Excellence for Fluid and Thermal Sciences builds upon this long-standing relationship and aims to provide deeper insights into critical aspects of space mission design.
The need for such a Centre was underscored by the growing complexity of ISRO’s space missions, which require precise thermal management solutions to ensure the safety and functionality of spacecraft during their launch, flight, and landing phases.
