Singapore (CWBN)_World Food Day is today. Let’s be grateful for all the food that made its way to us during the lockdowns imposed in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many realised the value of the food we enjoyed and are now more mindful of how much we consume.

However, numerous people were not so lucky: some went hungry and others went through hard times to put a meal on their tables. With that sobering thought, do we truly consider the extent of food wastage that still occurs around the world?

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) declared World Food Day with the objective of raising global awareness on issues resulting from poverty and hunger. Each year, the FAO has adopted various themes to highlight areas that especially need to be addressed on a global scale.

Food Heroes

This year’s theme, “Food Heroes” honours the importance of people such as farmers, vendors and other food workers. Against the backdrop of a global pandemic and massive supply chain disruptions which caused a near scarcity of food, they rose to the occasion with aplomb.

Zero Waste

After seeing these drastic changes, we realise the significance of better food management. We must work to promote zero waste of food. Let’s be grateful for what we’ve been given and not be food-foolish. Our futures and those of our loved ones depend on it.
