Yahaya Bello: Did politics override sound leadership?

Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ It is now imperative for the global community to conduct a thorough and impartial assessment of the tenure of Alhaji Yahaya Bello (GYB), the former governor of Kogi State. Given the unique political landscape of the state, such an evaluation is essential to overcome biases and perceptions and to accurately gauge the impact of his administration on governance and development.

There is a legitimate debate over whether Governor Bello’s leadership prioritized political maneuvering over delivering tangible benefits to the people. Critics point to his presidential ambitions, involvement in party politics, and contentious policies such as the prolonged screening of the state workforce. These actions have stirred discontent among both residents and observers outside the state.

However, recent events have shed new light on Governor Bello’s legacy. The visit of the Nigerian Guild of Editors showcased significant infrastructure developments under his administration. From the revitalization of the Muhammadu Buhari Centre to the renovation of hospitals and construction of flyovers, tangible progress is evident across various sectors.

Notably, the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara stands as a testament to Governor Bello’s commitment to education and innovation. With programs tailored to address regional needs, including petroleum engineering and medical sciences, CUSTECH promises to be a hub of academic excellence.

The endorsement of Governor Bello’s achievements by the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors underscores the significance of these developments. The transformation of the state’s infrastructure not only improves the quality of life for residents but also positions Kogi as a hub for education and healthcare services in the region.

However, questions remain about Governor Bello’s focus on political ambitions at the expense of highlighting his administration’s accomplishments. Despite the substantial progress made, the lack of visibility for initiatives like CUSTECH and infrastructure projects raises concerns about effective communication and governance priorities.

Moving forward, it is essential for leaders to strike a balance between political aspirations and governance responsibilities. While political engagement is necessary, it should not overshadow the imperative of delivering tangible benefits to citizens. As the saying goes, “seeing is believing,” and it is incumbent upon leaders to ensure that their actions speak louder than words, leaving a lasting legacy of progress and development. Ultimately, Governor Bello’s tenure serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing governance over politics, as the two are inherently distinct pursuits with divergent objectives.
