USA (Commonwealth Union)_ Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old community organizer and state lawmaker, has won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a close contest that drew national attention. Mamdani received about 43.5% of the vote, while Cuomo trailed with 36.3%, according to preliminary results. The race included nearly a dozen Democratic candidates aiming to lead the nation’s largest city.

Born to Indian-Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani and Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani becomes the first Indian-origin Muslim to secure a major party nomination for the city’s top office. Following his victory, Mamdani shared a message on social media, quoting Nelson Mandela. He wrote, “In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City”. He also thanked all his supporters. The primary took place during an intense heatwave, and final results may take several days to confirm due to high early and absentee voting. The contest came at a critical time for Democrats, as national leaders try to regain momentum after recent electoral setbacks.

Cuomo, who left office in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct and criticism over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, had been the early frontrunner. His campaign was backed by prominent centrist figures, including former President Bill Clinton. He also had strong support from pro-Israel groups. Meanwhile, Mamdani ran with support from the Democratic Socialists of America and focused on affordability and public services. His proposals included free public transit, universal childcare, rent freezes for low-income housing, and city-run grocery stores, paid for by higher taxes on wealthy residents.

Mamdani’s campaign drew interest online, notably among youths. Additionally, he also earned high-profile support from figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. Mamdani’s strong support for Palestinian rights and condemnation of Israel sparked controversy inside the party. However, his message resonated with many people dissatisfied with the current system. If elected in the general election, Mamdani would become New York City’s first mayor of South Asian roots.
