Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron expressed his admiration for Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, highlighting the global reach of Indian cinema. During his remarks at the recent NDTV World Summit, Cameron revealed that “Devdas” is his favorite Bollywood film and fondly recalled his meeting with the acclaimed actress during his tenure as Prime Minister. “Devdas,” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a poignant tale of unconditional love, featuring Aishwarya in the lead role alongside iconic performances from Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Released in 2002, the film has since become a classic, resonating with viewers around the world. Cameron stated, “The film presented a harrowing portrayal of the terrible events that happened there and a reminder of how the country has suffered from terrorism.” He emphasized the need for countries to unite against the common threat of extreme terrorism, which continues to challenge nations globally. Cameron’s comments come at a time when UK-India relations are crucial, especially given the shared challenges both countries face regarding security and counter-terrorism. The former UK Prime Minister noted that amidst conflicts in various parts of the world, it is essential to recognize the ongoing battle against extremism that affects both nations.

In terms of work, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan continues to shine in her career. Last month, she attended the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, where she was honored with the Best Actress award for her role as Nandini in Mani Ratnam’s “Ponniyin Selvan: II.” This recognition adds to her illustrious career, which began with her crowning as Miss World in 1994. Aishwarya’s filmography includes celebrated titles such as “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” “Jodhaa Akbar,” “Genes,” and “Guzaarish,” showcasing her versatility and depth as an actress.

Furthermore, Aishwarya’s continued presence at prestigious events, including the Cannes Film Festival and Paris Fashion Week, reflects her status as an international icon. Her recent role in “Ponniyin Selvan: II,” where she portrayed both Nandini and her mother, Mandakini Devi, showcases her ability to take on complex characters that resonate with audiences. As David Cameron and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s paths crossed at the NDTV World Summit, their shared recognition of art and the pressing challenges of our time illustrate the potential for cultural diplomacy to foster greater understanding and collaboration between nations. In an era marked by global unrest, the power of cinema and shared narratives offers a pathway to bridge divides and promote unity.
