Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ The Nigerian diaspora has solidified its place as a powerhouse of global influence and economic strength. With over $90 billion in annual remittances, Nigerians abroad contribute significantly to national development, making them one of Africa’s most valuable expatriate communities. This remarkable financial contribution underscores the diaspora’s pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s economic landscape.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), highlighted this profound impact during a Ramadan Lecture organized by ‘No Dull Moment in Islam’ (NDMI). She emphasized that the diaspora remains an invaluable asset, not only through financial remittances but also in the transfer of knowledge, skills, and investments that drive progress in various sectors.
While concerns about brain drain persist, Dabiri-Erewa urged a shift in perspective. Instead of seeing migration as a loss, she advocated for a model of “brain circulation,” where Nigerians who acquire expertise abroad return to invest their knowledge and resources back home. This approach ensures that migration becomes an avenue for impact rather than mere departure.
Migration is a fundamental human experience, a journey often taken for better opportunities. Even Prophet Muhammad (SAW) migrated for a better life but ultimately returned to rebuild his homeland. In the same spirit, Dabiri-Erewa called on Nigerians abroad to maintain strong ties with their roots, contribute to national development, and actively shape Nigeria’s future.
The contributions of Nigerians abroad extend beyond financial support. In various industries—medicine, technology, sports, business, and entertainment—Nigerians continue to make history. An astonishing 70% of Black doctors in the diaspora are of Nigerian descent, a testament to their dedication and excellence in the medical field. Likewise, Nigerian professionals have emerged as industry leaders in tech innovation, sports, and the creative arts.
Recently, Morotoluwa Ojomo, a Nigerian-born athlete, achieved Super Bowl victory, marking a significant milestone in international sports. His triumphant return home was celebrated by NiDCOM, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to honoring Nigerians excelling abroad. Ojomo’s words, “The grass is greener where you nurture it,” resonate deeply, urging individuals to invest in Nigeria’s growth despite global opportunities.
Similarly, world-renowned boxing champion Anthony Joshua returned to Nigeria in December 2024 to reconnect with his heritage in Sagamu, Ogun State. His visit was met with overwhelming pride and admiration, proving that no matter how far one goes, home remains a place of deep significance.
Beyond personal success, Dabiri-Erewa stressed the importance of the diaspora’s active engagement in national development. She encouraged mentorship programs, business ventures, and community-driven projects that foster progress. Through strategic investments and shared expertise, Nigerians abroad can help elevate key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Understanding the legal and cultural landscape of host countries is also crucial. Dabiri-Erewa urged the Nigerian diaspora to remain law-abiding, uphold national pride, and serve as ambassadors of excellence. By doing so, they safeguard not only their personal interests but also Nigeria’s global reputation.
The term ‘Japa’ a popular slang for mass migration, has become synonymous with the pursuit of better opportunities abroad. However, Dabiri-Erewa championed a shift from ‘Japa’ to ‘Impact.’ Instead of merely leaving, she encouraged Nigerians to build bridges between their host countries and Nigeria, ensuring that their experiences and resources contribute to national growth.
As Ramadan symbolizes renewal, patience, and hope, Dabiri-Erewa reminded Nigerians that the country’s transformation requires collective effort. “Nigeria is our home. We all have a role to play in making it a place of sanctuary, not just for ourselves but for future generations,” she concluded.
The Nigerian diaspora remains a beacon of resilience, excellence, and innovation. Their impact goes beyond remittances to include legacies, lives, and futures. Whether in sports, medicine, business, or community development, their contributions affirm that Nigeria’s potential knows no bounds.
Through a renewed commitment to national development, Nigerians at home and abroad can turn migration into a force for sustainable change, ensuring that Nigeria remains a land of opportunities and progress for generations to come.
