Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ In a decisive move to restore order in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator following the declaration of a state of emergency in the region. The announcement, made during a national broadcast on Tuesday, marks a significant shift in the state’s governance structure amid escalating political tensions.
The President emphasized that the Administrator would manage the state’s affairs during the emergency period, ensuring stability while allowing the judicial arm to continue its constitutional responsibilities. Unlike an elected governor, Ibas will not have the power to enact new laws, but he will be permitted to formulate regulations necessary for governance subject to approval by the Federal Executive Council and formal promulgation by the President.
“I hereby nominate Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State,” Tinubu declared. “For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not affect the judicial arm, which shall continue to function in accordance with its constitutional mandate.”
The President’s decision comes as Rivers State grapples with a political crisis, prompting the federal government to intervene. While the state’s judiciary remains intact, the Administrator’s role will be to stabilize governance, restore law and order, and ensure continuity in state administration.
The appointment of Vice Admiral Ibas, a retired senior naval officer, signals a strategic approach to handling the crisis, leveraging his leadership experience and disciplined background to navigate the state through this period of emergency governance.
