Police in South Africa have recovered human remains after a dangerous rescue mission. An officer was lowered from a helicopter into a river filled with crocodiles. The team was searching for a businessman who had been swept away by floodwaters the week before. The crocodile believed to have eaten the man had already been killed. Even so, the operation was very risky. Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter said it was a tense moment.

He explained that going near a crocodile is always dangerous. Potgieter used a rope to tie the animal. The helicopter then lifted both Potgieter and the crocodile out of the river. The rescue took place at the Komati River in the north-east of the country. Tests will now be done to confirm the identity of the remains. DNA testing will show if they belong to the missing businessman. The man had tried to drive across a low bridge during heavy flooding. His car got stuck in the water. When police arrived, the car was empty.

They believed he had been carried away by the strong current. This information was shared by police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo. Police used drones and helicopters to search the area. During the search, they saw a small island. Several crocodiles were resting there in the sun. Potgieter said one crocodile stood out. It looked very full and did not move much. He said the animal did not react to the loud noise from drones and the helicopter. This made the team suspect it had recently eaten.

The crocodile was later killed. Potgieter then carried out the difficult task of securing it. The animal was enormous. It measured about 4.5 meters long and weighed around 500 kilograms. It was taken to Kruger National Park. There, human remains were found inside it. Potgieter also said they found six different types of shoes inside the crocodile. He explained that this does not always mean it attacked many people. Crocodiles often swallow different objects. South Africa’s acting police chief praised Potgieter for his courage and bravery during the mission.
