Canada is working with its global partners in strengthening migration systems to address shared challenges. Last week, the minister of immigration, refugees & citizenship, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, led Canada’s delegation to the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) ’26, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The IMRF brought together countries across the world to review progress & share practical solutions for migration management. Canada reaffirmed its support for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly & Regular migration, & highlighted how international partnerships may help advance priorities at home. Also includes economic growth, sustainable immigration, and strong, resilient communities. These help create conditions for migrants to participate fully in the economy & society. This also strengthens communities and economies.
In supporting these objectives, the Government of Canada is committing approximately USD 5.11 (CAD 7) million towards 8 international projects in Southeast Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean. These investments may support practical measures to strengthen migration systems. Additionally, the government will expand safe and regular pathways, and create capacity to better manage migration and integrate newcomers.
Minister Diab also committed to five pledges that support Canada’s focus on secure, well-managed migration and economic growth. These are:
- The principled use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in migration
- Sustained engagement of the whole of government, besides the whole of society
- Innovative practices in supporting labour mobility initiatives globally
- Addressing misinformation which is migration-related
- Strengthening migration systems through international assistance, besides capacity-building partnerships
These actions together help migrants contribute fully to their communities. Additionally, this approach strengthens Canada’s economy and social fabric while supporting a more effective and well-managed global migration system. Through its participation in IMRF ’26, Canada is working with partners to advance practical solutions. These may strengthen migration systems both domestically and internationally.
