British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper intends to lead a UK-convened international coalition to tackle the global emergency of violence against women & girls.
Mirroring the British government’s mission to halve Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG) in a decade, the coalition announced at the Global Partnerships Conference that countries worldwide may share expertise & scale up prevention work.
8 countries have signed up to this new coalition, spearheaded by the foreign secretary.
The Coalition’s efforts may better protect women and girls worldwide from violence and abuse. This development is as the UK drives a new international effort to drive progress. The initiative was announced by the Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Wednesday, 20 May ’26, at the Global Partnerships Conference in London.
The new coalition brings together 8 countries to work in partnership in preventing violence. In this manner, women & girls may live free from fear, no matter who or where they are. Member states may drive practical action in preventing domestic abuse, besides sexual violence, which tends to affect 1 in every 3 women globally. It may also tackle online abuse, which seems to be on the rise globally.
Founding members are Britain, South Africa, Brazil, Morocco, Spain, Jamaica, Bosnia & Herzegovina, & Australia.
As the world faces increasing conflict, the International Coalition may also look into strengthening global efforts in preventing sexual violence in conflict & other forms of violence in humanitarian crises.
Next year, Britain may convene a major summit on tackling violence against women & girls. This is where countries may set out further commitments & report on progress.
The government has already pledged the largest crackdown on violence against women & girls in British history. The Government intends to halve these horrific crimes within a decade, besides introducing lifesaving policies similar to Raneem’s Law. It has witnessed domestic abuse specialists embedded in 999 control rooms.
