USA (Commonwealth Union)_ At an age when most teenagers are focused on exams and college applications, 17-year-old Indian-American student Riddhi Chauhan has already achieved what many only dream of. She currently leads nearly 300 US Navy cadets as the Battalion Commanding Officer of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens, New York. The position is the highest student leadership role in the programme and reflects years of hard work, discipline and determination. Riddhi’s amazing achievement has brought pride to the Indian community and is a testimony to how dedication and perseverance can help youngsters achieve extraordinary milestones.
Riddhi’s journey has now taken another major step forward after securing admission to the Naval Academy Preparatory School, bringing her closer to her dream of becoming a commissioned officer in the United States Navy. Her success did not come overnight. Riddhi joined the NJROTC programme as a freshman with the goal of being more confident and developing her leadership skills. Rather than settling for small feats, she continuously worked her way through the different leadership positions. Over the years, she served as Academic Commander, STEM Commander, Platoon Leader and Inspection Commander before earning the prestigious role of Battalion Commanding Officer.

Now Riddhi runs the day-to-day operations of the battalion, organizes training sessions and mentors hundreds of cadets. Her daily routine is a testimony to her dedication. She reaches school four days a week before 7 am for drill practice before regular classes balancing military training and academics. Riddhi’s accomplishments go beyond leadership. As Academic Commander, she helped her school’s team qualify for the second round of the Leadership and Academic Bowl for two consecutive years. She also contributed to the battalion securing first place in a national academic competition.
Riddhi also spearheaded the development of the first SeaPerch underwater robot for her battalion in another amazing feat that provided her fellow cadets with a valuable experiential learning in robotics and engineering. One of the most amazing things about her journey is her commitment to help others succeed. Throughout her career, Riddhi has mentored over 200 cadets and helped younger students develop confidence, discipline and leadership skills. Riddhi believes that the true essence of leadership is serving others rather than seeking recognition. She credits her leadership style to the values of humility, compassion and selfless service instilled by Mahant Swami Maharaj and her association with BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha.
Riddhi is the daughter of Ruchika and Dilip Chauhan. Her family originates from Jaipur, Rajasthan. Upon completion of the preparatory programme, Riddhi hopes to join the United States Naval Academy. The young lady at just 17 has already created a record of achievements, inspiring others that age is no bar to success. Her journey has been an inspiration not only in the US but also to Indians across the world, showing that with dedication, discipline and a desire to serve, anyone can create amazing opportunities.
