UK (Commonwealth Union)_ The political influence of the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom continues to grow, with several Indian-origin lawmakers securing important roles in Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s first cabinet reshuffle. Their appointments reflect the increasing presence of British Indians in national politics and underline Labour’s efforts to build a leadership team that better represents modern Britain. Andy Burnham became Britain’s seventh prime minister in just ten years after taking office on July 20, following Keir Starmer’s resignation. The 56-year-old wasted no time in reshaping his government, removing several ministers associated with the previous administration and promising a fresh direction for the country.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham pledged to introduce a “new political model” and launch a decade-long plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis while rebuilding the British economy. As part of the reshuffle, Burnham appointed John Healey as Chancellor, Ed Miliband as Foreign Secretary and Wes Streeting as defence secretary. Alongside these high-profile changes, several MPs of Indian heritage were handed key government positions, highlighting the growing importance of the Indian diaspora within British politics.
Kanishka Narayan
Among the biggest winners was Kanishka Narayan, who was appointed Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, a newly created role that reflects the government’s focus on emerging technologies. Narayan, who was born in Muzaffarpur in Bihar, India, moved to Wales with his family at the age of 12. Educated at Eton College, the University of Oxford and Stanford University, he entered Parliament after winning the Vale of Glamorgan seat in the 2024 general election. He previously served as a junior minister in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology before receiving his latest promotion.

Satvir Kaur
Satvir Kaur also earned a significant place in Burnham’s government. The Southampton Test MP, whose parents migrated from Punjab and ran a saree shop in Southampton, now serves as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. She also holds responsibilities in the Home Office, where she oversees safeguarding and efforts to tackle violence against women and girls. Kaur returned to ministerial duties earlier this year after maternity leave and has now taken on broader responsibilities.
Harpreet Uppal
Harpreet Uppal, the Labour MP for Huddersfield, has been appointed Assistant Whip, a key parliamentary role responsible for maintaining party discipline and managing legislative business. Uppal first entered Parliament in 2024 and previously worked on Andy Burnham’s successful campaign to become Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017.
Lisa Nandy
Another prominent Indian-origin politician Lisa Nandy retained her position as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Born in Manchester, Nandy is the daughter of Dipak Nandy, who came from Kolkata, and a British mother, Luise Byers. First elected as the MP for Wigan in 2010, she became the constituency’s first female and first Asian representative. After contesting the Labour leadership election in 2020, she later joined the front bench and has continued to hold one of the party’s most senior Cabinet roles.
The reshuffle also strengthened diversity across Labour’s leadership. Uma Kumaran, a Hindu MP of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, joined the Foreign Office as a junior minister, taking the number of Hindu and Sikh ministers in the senior government team to four. However, not every Indian-origin MP advanced. Seema Malhotra and Preet Kaur Gill, both regarded as close allies of former prime minister Keir Starmer, returned to the backbenches after losing their ministerial posts. The latest appointments demonstrate how the Indian diaspora is becoming an increasingly influential force in British politics. From technology and equality to culture and parliamentary management, Indian-origin leaders are now playing a larger role in shaping government policy and contributing to the country’s political future.
