Ugly Is the New Beautiful: Why Fashion Can’t Stop Falling for Weird Shoes

For years and decades, the fashion norm dictated that beautiful shoes should be elegant. Imagine delicate and graceful ballet flats, sleek and pointy stilettos, or slim yet unique sandals that barely seemed to be even heavier than a ball of cotton. Comfort and grace were key in each shoe design. However, as time has passed by, a redefining of this conventional view has brought forth a new reality. In the current world, shoes that instantly draw attention are often the ones that are designed in a way where beauty is the last thing they would be.

Chunky clogs, fisherman sandals, oversized sneakers, jelly shoes, and exaggerated ballet flats are gaining popularity among many others. The shoes, which were once described as practical, old-fashioned, or simply just “ugly,” have started to become some of fashion’s most interesting accessories that people can’t get enough of.

The fisherman sandal is a perfect example one could refer to. With its wide woven straps and sturdy shape, it was initially associated with practicality instead of glamour. However, the chunky version of footwear has recently become a fashion statement. The shoes are usually styled with anything and everything. The options are limitless, ranging from flowing dresses to tailored trousers. Vogue has previously highlighted the style as part of the “ugly shoe” movement, noting that its heavier silhouette could possess the potential to turn an otherwise simple outfit into a statement look.

Then there are clogs to look at. While these shoes are more commonly associated with nurses, gardeners, or comfortable everyday footwear, which is usually far away from fashion runways, clogs have become a familiar sight in street style. Their bulky soles and shape make them hard to ignore, which may be the point.

Even stranger footwear is joining the conversation. Jelly shoes, once strongly associated with childhood summers, have been making a massive comeback. In 2026, Harper’s Bazaar highlighted the versatility of transparent jelly flats, showcasing their pairing with everything from casual T-shirts to silky dresses. This shows how an item associated with the beach can be transformed into a fashionable statement.

Therefore the question arises. What is the reason behind the sudden attraction to shoes that appear unusual and completely out of the ordinary?

One answer that could be accepted is comfort. Fashion has moved away from the idea that looking stylish requires suffering. High heels are no longer automatically considered essential for looking polished. And from these examples, one can see how fashion workplaces have become more accepting of sneakers, sandals, and flats.

Social media has also entirely changed what “fashionable” looks like. A shoe does not have to be conventionally attractive to become viral in the present day. In fact, looking unusual can make it more intriguing on Instagram or TikTok, as it gains more attention and sometimes even acts as ‘clickbait’ in a way. The stranger the silhouette, the more likely someone might stop scrolling and ask, “Would I actually wear that?” It shows that beauty is just a perception we have made up in our minds or the ideas of someone else, which we adapt to.

Perhaps that is the real appeal of the ugly shoe. It does not simply complete an outfit; instead, it starts a conversation and prompts us to question whether what is typically considered ‘ugly’ was actually beautiful from the beginning, especially if someone never perceived it as unappealing in the first place. Would it be what is considered beautiful from the start? The entire view of fashion These questions redefine the entire view of fashion. through these questions.

After all, if fashion has taught us anything, it is that today’s eyesore can become tomorrow’s must-have.

And right now, ugly has never looked better.
