A US Air Force officer recounted the terrifying moments following the shooting down of his aircraft over Iran. The officer, known only as “Bravo”, said he feared he would die after his parachute failed to open properly. He was one of two US airmen forced to leave their aircraft during the incident in April.
Bravo said the damaged parachute left him falling rapidly toward the ground. He tried to pull parts of the parachute loose and resolve the problem while he was still falling. He said the most frightening moment came when he looked up and could not see his parachute.
Despite the dangerous fall, Bravo survived. However, he suffered serious injuries. He broke his back, shoulder and arm. He estimated that he hit the ground at between 70 and 100 miles per hour. The two airmen became separated after leaving their aircraft. They then had to avoid Iranian forces while waiting for American special forces to reach them.
Bravo was injured but continued moving through difficult terrain. He climbed to a high ridge because he feared that Iranian forces could find him. He later described his survival as a miracle. The other airman, known as “Alpha,” was rescued within about six hours. The rescue involved heavy fighting as US forces moved into the area and returned with him.
Bravo remained behind enemy lines for about 48 hours before he was rescued. The operation involved more than 90 US military personnel on the ground inside Iran. It was reportedly the first time in decades that US forces had carried out such an operation inside the country.
The rescue also faced major problems. Some aircraft used in the mission became stuck in desert sand. They could not be recovered safely and had to be destroyed. Several helicopters were also destroyed. Officials said the action was partly intended to prevent sensitive military technology from falling into Iranian hands.
The aircraft that was shot down was an F-15E fighter jet. It was reportedly worth around $30 million. The missile used against it was much cheaper by comparison. The incident took place several weeks after the United States and Israel began military action against Iran.
The conflict has continued for months and has caused concern over rising energy prices and their wider impact on the global economy. The war has also become a political issue in the United States. With congressional elections approaching in November, public opinion in support of the conflict remains low. US President Donald Trump has indicated that the fighting could continue until at least the November election.
