DOHA, 23rd September 2026 – Artificial intelligence is making remarkable progress beyond labs into real-life applications; Qatar University (QU) is keen to be one of the torchbearers.
On 22nd September 2026, QU was awarded the Academic AI and Research Excellence Award at the Google Cloud Summit 2026, signifying the university’s attempts at using artificial intelligence in its academic tutorials, in its research activities, and in its service delivery.
This recognition comes at a time when QU is going beyond just testing AI. Through its association with Google Cloud, the university is incorporating Gemini Enterprise, which enables members of the university community – students, academic staff, and administrative staff – to make use of generative-AI technology in their academic, administrative, and research work. Additionally, the Spark AI Innovation Hub of QU is being created and developed on the basis of specific computing infrastructure that would help researchers design, experiment, and utilise their AI models in areas of high significance.
This combination may be very important, because while generative AI is widely accessible, a real challenge remains for simply any institution: to make out of the powerful models the secure and useful systems that can operate across the whole organization.
QU’s strategy seems fully aimed at that transition.

The timing of this announcement is especially interesting: QU’s Annual Research Forum and Exhibition took place on 28 April 2026 and was devoted to the focus on “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Aspirations and Challenges”, including several sessions on how AI influences education, research, innovation, and the economy.
At the Google Cloud Summit, Professor Aiman Erbad, Vice President of Research and Innovation at Qatar University (QU), participated in the panel called “Architecting the Future: How Leaders in Qatar are Scaling Up Data & AI” and talked about how QU is making sure that the necessary infrastructural and research environment is built for the practical adoption of AI. QU also showcased the use of Gemini Enterprise, and Dr Nayef Al-Yafei, Associate Vice President for Technology and Information Security, demonstrated the platform’s incorporation into QU’s digital environment.
The project closely aligns with Qatar’s aspirations to drive its economy based on knowledge, as outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030. As a result, this award is significant for the institution, as it provides insight into how universities might become platforms for AI technology development.
