MUMBAI, India (CWBN)_ India’s largest infrastructure developer Larsen & Toubro secured the contract to build the country’s longest river bridge, which is an INR 3166 crore project and will be built across the Brahmaputra river. L&T will build a 19-km-long river bridge along the National Highway 127-B over the Brahmaputra river. The river bridge will run from Dhubri in Assam to Phulbari in Meghalaya, thereby connecting the two northeastern states.
The significant importance of the river bridge is that it will connect the northeastern states with the rest of the country, on completion of the project. The bridge will reduce the distance between Assam and Meghalaya by 250 km and will improve the connectivity between the two states. Currently, it takes two hours and thirty minutes by ferry to travel between Dhubri and Phulbari.
The Whole Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President of Civil Infrastructure of L&T Mr S V Desai stated that the river bridge will not only provide easy access to the international borders, but will also promote the trade and commerce in the northeastern states which will accelerate the development in all northeastern states particularly Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura and the Barak Valley.
Mr S V Desai said, “This is an extremely challenging project, and we thank our client, National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd for reposing confidence in our capability to build a such a defining piece of infrastructure”. The construction conglomerate said that they will execute the project in the near future which is expected to be completed by 2026-2027.
In the recent past, L&T also bagged the mega contract for a bullet train project. This is an INR 7,000 crore project from National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to build 87.57 km long high-speed bullet train corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, which includes the stretch of a bridge between Vadodara and Ahmedabad, and the Anand/Nadiad Station. L&T was the lowest bidder in the auction and secured the mega project.
