Scottish first minister accused of hiding behind PM Johnson

EDINBURGH (CU)_During his two-day visit to Scotland last week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson attracted criticism for his remarks that former PM Margaret Thatcher gave “a big early start” in the country’s transition to a green future. “Thanks to Margaret Thatcher, who closed so many coalmines across the country, we had a big early start and we’re now moving rapidly away from coal all together,” the Prime Minister said in response to a question raised by a reporter. These remarks prompted widespread criticism, with Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon dismissing the comments as “crass and deeply insensitive”, since Thatcher’s destruction of the coal industry “utterly devastated” the lives and communities in Scotland.
