Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II The Great, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim conveyed his profound sympathies to members of the Royal Family, the Government, the people of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Commonwealth.

“We have learned of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s death with deep grief and sadness. At this sad moment, the whole International Maritime Organization membership and staff express their condolences “Mr. Lim stated. Currently, the IMO has 175 Member States and three Associate Members. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention was approved on March 6, 1948, during the United Nations Maritime Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The convention went into effect ten years later, on March 17, 1958, when the twenty-first state ratified it. The inaugural meeting of the IMO was placed on January 6, 1959, at Church House in central London.

Here at IMO, I had the incredible honor and privilege of meeting Her Majesty. Her real interest in shipping and marine issues was impressive “Mr. Lim explained. The International Maritime Organization is headquartered in the United Kingdom. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II The Great inaugurated the new IMO facility in 1983 and also paid a visit to the Organization to commemorate its seventieth anniversary. Her Majesty unveiled a memorial plaque and spoke with the event’s visitors, which included officials from IMO Member States, inter-governmental and international non-governmental organizations, and IMO Secretariat personnel. Her Majesty’s passion and service will continue to inspire and be remembered by everybody.
