Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – The governments of both the UK and France have come together to enhance seafarers’ conditions with the new Seafarers’ Charter.
The UK government has introduced a new Seafarers’ Charter, a significant step to secure equitable wages, proper rest intervals, and adequate training for thousands of seafarers. The charter, which has garnered support from prominent ferry companies like DFDS Ferries, Condor Ferries, Brittany Ferries, and Stena, is a crucial component of the government’s broader Nine-point plan. This comprehensive strategy aims to safeguard seafarers and enhance their employment rights, ensuring fair treatment and remuneration regardless of their ship’s flag or nationality.
This initiative is in direct response to the unfortunate event where P&O Ferries dismissed almost 800 employees abruptly and without any consultation or prior notice last year. To prevent such unfair practices and protect seafarers’ rights, the UK government has taken decisive action through the Seafarers’ Charter.
Moreover, the French government is also set to launch a similar initiative, reinforcing the commitment to improve seafarers’ working conditions and rights. This positive step towards ensuring the welfare of seafarers will be highlighted during the visit of the UK’s Maritime Minister, Baroness Vere, to Paris, where she will meet with her French counterpart, Minister Berville.
Maritime Minister Baroness Vere says “Fair pay and protection against unlawful discrimination are the basic rights of any employee. Our seafarers deserve nothing less.”
The Maritime Minister indicated that consequently, she anticipates active participation from companies throughout the maritime sector in endorsing this Charter, signaling a clear dedication to safeguarding the rights and well-being of their workforce.
She also indicated that, during their presence in Paris alongside Minister Berville, reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the protection of those laboring in the Channel. Furthermore, they will persist in collaborating with the international allies on this crucial issue, recognizing its significance for seafarers worldwide.
