UK (Commonwealth Union)_ At the inaugural Commonwealth Diplomats Forum on June 7, 2024, held at Marlborough House, the Commonwealth Secretariat’s headquarters, digital diplomacy and democratic principles in elections were prominently discussed. Accordingly, diplomats from within the Commonwealth and beyond gathered for this event in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth. Under the overarching theme of ’75 Years of the Commonwealth and the Future of Diplomacy’, experienced diplomats and experts engaged in a dynamic exchange of knowledge.

The event provided a unique platform for participants to explore the history, current role, and prospective evolution of the Commonwealth in shaping global diplomatic relations. Delving into the future of diplomacy, discussions centered on the Commonwealth’s enduring contributions to global diplomatic endeavors and its capacity to adapt to contemporary challenges. The forum also highlighted the institution’s pivotal role in promoting international cooperation among its diverse membership.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, highlighted the pivotal role of the Commonwealth in upholding democracy in its member states. She delivered her statement, saying, “The diplomacy of our institution is built on the Commonwealth’s unique ability to convene, to unite, and to tackle challenges. Our work to protect the process, institutions, and culture of democracy, as well as our quiet-but-essential work for peace serves not just the Commonwealth, but the wider world. We recognise that new technologies have become critical to nearly every sector and are transforming the way international actors interact and offering new opportunities for international and bilateral cooperation”. She added, “Through our Artificial Intelligence Consortium, we are setting a new standard for the use of AI in government and throughout society. We remain committed to delivering a safer, healthier, more equitable, and just Commonwealth in which none of our 2.6 billion citizens in our family of 56 nations are left behind.”
In briefing the discussions, Professor Luis Franceschi, Assistant Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, reiterated the institution’s inclusive approach, emphasizing its openness to engagement with all nations, not just its member states. Additionally, in an era of rapid technological advancement, digital diplomacy has emerged as a cornerstone of diplomatic practice. Diplomats at the forum shared insights into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and platforms on diplomatic endeavors, deliberating on both the challenges and opportunities they present. Furthermore, Suresh Yadav, Senior Director of the Secretariat’s Trade, Ocean, and Natural Resources Directorate, stressed the continued importance of leveraging AI in diplomacy. He highlighted the potential of AI to empower countries, regardless of their size or capacity, by providing access to critical evidence and data. The Commonwealth, he noted, is actively exploring AI-driven solutions to aid member states in navigating the complexities of the digital age.
With numerous national elections happening in 2024 across more than 64 countries globally, Linford Andrews, Adviser and Head of the Secretariat’s Electoral Support Section, emphasized the Commonwealth’s pivotal role in upholding democratic values to ensure reliable and transparent elections across the member nations. Furthermore, since 1980, the Commonwealth has conducted over 200 election observation missions in 40 member states, contributing significantly to the credibility, transparency, and fairness of electoral processes worldwide.
