Sri Lanka (Commonwealth) _ After winning his second race in the FormulaEuro World of Formula competition, the Sri Lankan Yevan David emerged as the overall champion, defeating Fernando Barichelo by just 0.5 seconds in a thrilling and intensely contested final race.
David started at P5 on the Reverse Grid system, which was undoubtedly an incredible performance, but Yevan’s clever and well-planned approach guaranteed victory.
This comes after he recorded his first victory in the opening race yesterday. Yevan also took home the championship’s “Rookie Driver Award.”
Fittingly, the country’s national anthem played for the second time as Yevan David joyfully stood on the victory platform with the Sri Lankan flag. David achieved his second victory on his first weekend in the series by winning the last race of the Euroformula Open season. There was a lot of action in Race 3 at Monza, which was held on a damp track once more, but the Sri Lankan from Motopark was the best at everything.
“It has been an amazing weekend and experience for me,” he said. “Maybe in the future, you’ll see more of me.” Garfias shoved Petrov, who had been on pole for the final race, into the chicane during the first braking, and Simonazzi also cut the chicane before the Lankan could emerge and win a second time.
Bergmeister overtook Benavides and Gold Cup hero Roubicek in third place after a fantastic comeback from the rear. Yevan David, 17 years old, won his first race in the EuroFormula competition.
David defeated seasoned competitors like Fernando Barichello, the son of renowned Formula 1 champion Rueben Barichello, on a greasy track and under challenging conditions.
David, who moved up from F4 racing, is the first Sri Lankan to compete in this category. The 17-year-old showed skill and poise throughout the race, winning in difficult conditions on a wet circuit.
Since David moved from Formula One to Euroformula, his triumph represents a major turning point for Sri Lanka in world motorsport racing. His triumph at Monza demonstrates his quick development in the sport and raises Sri Lanka’s profile on the international racing scene.
Yevan began karting at the age of six after moving to Singapore at the age of four. He was born in the UK to parents who were originally from Sri Lanka. With his Formula 4 birth, our local lad is now poised to make some significant remarks in the racing world!
Yesterday, in the Autodromo Nazionale de Monza in Italy, young Yehan David achieved an incredible first victory in the 2024 Euroformula Open Championship. David, 17, who started fourth on the grid, easily defeated rivals including Brazilian Fernando Barichello, the son of renowned Formula 1 driver Rubens Barichello, and clear favorites Francesco Brad Benavides of the USA and Italian Simonazzi. As the first racer from Sri Lanka to compete in the Euroformula Open Championship, David represented Team Motopark and excelled in filthy and rainy conditions. He had previously competed in Formula Four racing. David will continue his journey at the 2024 Euroformula Open Championship series’ eighth and final, which began in Portugal in April.
A multi-event motor racing series for single-seater open-wheel formula racing cars, the 2024 Euroformula Open series took place around Europe. Drivers competed in the championship using Dallara 320 chassis cars built to the Euroformula Open Championship specifications. The season of the Euroformula Open Championship was the eleventh. There were eight race weekends throughout the season, each with three races. It began in late April and continued through October.
After being the lone rookie contestant for the first four rounds, teammate Fernando Barrichello won the Rookie Championship at the first race of round five, while Brad Benavides, who returned to the championship after not competing there since 2021, won the Drivers’ Championship with three races remaining. In the third race of the same round, their squad, Squad Motopark, which was the only multi-car team, emerged victorious in the Teams’ Championship.
On August 24, 2023, a tentative seven-round schedule was revealed, with an eighth event still to be determined. In September 2023, the Hockenheimring confirmed its hosting of the eighth round for the first time since 2019. The Mugello round was removed from the calendar because of this timetable.
