A growing hunger strike blames inadequate jail conditions on a “broken system.”

Bull stated that owing to a shortage of workers, he has only been allowed to visit the yard and breathe fresh air once in the previous two months.

According to Andrew Morrison, a spokeswoman for the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General, a repair project in the yard limited time outside, but a “regular yard schedule” has resumed.

However, Bull stated that outside time was an issue even before building began. Lockdowns, according to Bull, are another concern. He claims they result in three persons being detained together in a cell that barely has capacity for one.

Hopperton previously stated that some lockdowns might last three days. According to Bull, prisoners are not allowed access to hot water or containers to pee in while on lockdown.

Morrison stated that there had been lockdowns at the jail in the last week, but he did not specify how long they lasted or whether they have been more regular. He said that lockdowns are implemented for a variety of reasons, including security events, searches, infectious disease control, personnel absences, maintenance, and other concerns. Bull also has a message for those who believe detainees deserve to remain in deplorable conditions: don’t make quick judgements about prisoners.
