Hotels (Commonwealth Union)_ Aitken Spence Hotels has announced the management takeover of Rainforest Ecolodge, Sri Lanka’s first classified ecolodge and a pioneering force in eco-friendly hospitality. The ecolodge, which holds the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification, is recognized as a trailblazer in sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka.

Rainforest Ecolodge is a unique tourism initiative created by industry stakeholders and spearheaded by Prema Cooray, a respected figure in the hospitality sector. The project was also part of a USAID-sponsored study aimed at positioning Sri Lanka as a global leader in eco-friendly tourism. The lodge exemplifies the harmonious relationship between sustainable development and environmental stewardship, enhancing the destination’s biodiversity while benefiting the local community.

Rainforest Ecolodge is a standout in the global hospitality industry as the first hotel in Sri Lanka, fourth in Asia, and fifth in the world to receive LEED Platinum certification. This achievement reflects the lodge’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. The property features 20 eco-chalets, constructed ingeniously from reclaimed shipping containers and decks made from repurposed railway sleepers, underscoring a strong focus on reducing its environmental footprint.

Nestled discreetly within the 500-acre Enselwatte Tea Estate in Deniyaya, bordering the Sinharaja Rainforest, the lodge provides guests with an off-grid haven of tranquility and a deep immersion into the lush, wildlife-rich surroundings. The ecolodge offers picturesque treks and trails that lead to hidden waterfalls, guided by knowledgeable resident naturalists. This ensures a truly immersive and educational experience that highlights the biodiversity of the region.

Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings Joint Deputy Chairperson and Joint Managing Director, Stasshani Jayawardena, emphasized the company’s commitment to preserving and promoting Sri Lanka’s natural beauty. “The ultimate objective is to reinforce a dedication to preserving and promoting the natural beauty of Sri Lanka, ensuring that guests leave with a profound respect for the environment and a lasting impression of its untouched splendor,” Jayawardena stated. The company invites nature enthusiasts and green advocates to visit Rainforest Ecolodge for an enriching experience that includes educational treks and immersive learning opportunities.

Rainforest Ecolodge aims to provide a unique hospitality experience that showcases the area’s diverse ecosystem while minimizing environmental impact and supporting the local community. The partnership with Aitken Spence Hotels is geared towards elevating the lodge to new heights of excellence. Leveraging Aitken Spence’s industry expertise, the collaboration seeks to enhance and reposition Rainforest Ecolodge as a premier eco-tourism destination and a global model for sustainable travel.

As Aitken Spence Hotels takes over the management of Rainforest Ecolodge, the focus remains on creating a unique, eco-friendly hospitality experience that aligns with sustainable tourism practices. This initiative not only highlights Sri Lanka’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also sets a benchmark for future eco-tourism projects worldwide.
