As Canadians suffer with rising food prices, Loblaw posts Q4 profits of $529 million

-

Canada _ (Commonwealth Union) _ On Thursday, Loblaw Companies Ltd. reported fourth-quarter profits that above analysts’ predictions thanks to its pharmacy division and persistent grocery demand. According to the business, it made a $529 million profit that was distributed to common shareholders. In comparison to the same quarter last year, its fourth-quarter revenue increased by roughly 10% to $14.01 billion, above projections of $13.75 billion.

In contrast to analysts’ forecasts of $1.71 per share, Loblaw earned $1.76 per share on an adjusted basis. Richard Dufresne, the company’s chief financial officer, stated during a Thursday morning results call that the company’s food retail gross margins peaked in mid-2021, before the current inflation crisis in Canada started, but hadn’t since reached those levels.

The earnings results, according to him, “are more indication that [food] retail prices are not increasing faster than expenses, and the corporation is not taking advantage of inflation to boost profits,” he continued. Inflation dropped to 5.9% in January, but food costs increased still. Canadians are feeling the squeeze on their routine shopping runs as prices for meat, baked products, and veggies grew at a higher rate.

Others are getting impatient with food merchants because, according to detractors, “greedflation” has led to businesses profiting at the expense of consumers at a time when grocery costs are rising at the quickest rate in more than 40 years. “I spend all of the little money I have on groceries and rent. It shouldn’t cost that much to survive, “Mena Aparicio, who is also in Toronto, remarked.

Retailers are relying on sales of food and pharmaceuticals as customers focus spending on necessities and switch to less expensive, private-label alternatives from more expensive brands as a result of rising pricing. With continuous demand for cough and cold medications, high-margin beauty and cosmetics items, and food and pharmaceuticals companies experiencing solid growth, Loblaw reported a 9.7% increase in retail sector sales.
