Bharathiraja passes away at 84: Nation pays tribute to its greatest storyteller!

Chennai (Commonwealth Union)_ The Indian film industry is mourning the death of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, one of the most influential directors in Tamil cinema history, who died in Chennai at the age of 84. Family sources said the acclaimed director died due to age-related health complications at his residence. Widely regarded as a pioneer who changed the course of Tamil filmmaking, Bharathiraja leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning more than four decades. His innovative storytelling, realistic portrayal of rural life and ability to discover new talent changed the direction of Tamil cinema and earned him a permanent place among the great filmmakers of India.

Bharathiraja’s first film 16 Vayathinile (1977) became a landmark film, with Kamal Haasan, Sridevi and Rajinikanth in the lead roles. The film was a huge hit and is still considered one of the best works in Tamil cinema. In an era when most films were shot in studio sets, Bharathiraja took viewers into the heart of the Tamil Nadu countryside and portrayed village life with an authenticity rarely seen on screen. He followed up his success with a string of critically acclaimed films, including Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Puthiya Vaarpugal, Alaigal Oivathillai and Mann Vasanai. Through these films, he brought a new style of filmmaking, focusing on common people, their feelings and their relationships.

Bharathiraja, lovingly referred to as “Iyakkunar Imayam” for his use of cinema as a medium to highlight social issues, was also known for launching the careers of many actors and actresses who went on to become stars. Radhika, Radha, Ambika and Revathi were some of the names he introduced or nurtured, and he was known for spotting fresh faces and giving opportunities to newcomers who would go on to shape the future of Tamil cinema. He stepped away from directing in recent years but continued to act. He featured in several successful films, including Dhanush’s hit movie Thiruchitrambalam where his performance was widely appreciated by audiences and critics alike.

Tributes poured in from all corners of the country after news of his death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Bharathiraja a towering figure in Indian cinema whose work transformed Tamil filmmaking. In a condolence message, the Prime Minister praised the director’s realistic portrayal of rural life and his lasting influence on Indian cinema. Several leading actors and filmmakers from the South Indian film industry visited his Chennai residence to pay their last respects. Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, CM Vijay, Suriya, Siva Kumar, Radhika, lyricist Vairamuthu, music maestro Ilayaraja, Gangai Amaran, Keerthy Suresh and other stars paid tribute to the legendary filmmaker.

Messages of grief also poured in from actors Chiranjeevi, Allu Arjun and Mohanlal who called him a visionary storyteller whose films captured the beauty, struggles and emotions of everyday life. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay also paid his last respects and announced that Bharathiraja would be accorded full state honours at his funeral. The decision was taken after the members of the film fraternity appealed to the government to officially honour his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Bharathiraja is a six-time National Award-winning director and a Padmashri recipient.

 

After public tributes in Chennai, Bharathiraja’s body was taken to his native region in the Theni district where his family decided to lay him to rest. His last rites were performed in his farmhouse near Vathalagundu, a place closely associated with his roots and the landscapes that inspired many of his films. Having directed over 40 films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema, Bharathiraja’s influence extends far beyond awards and box-office success. His work redefined storytelling, celebrated rural culture and inspired generations of filmmakers. For millions of cinema lovers, his movies will remain a timeless reminder of his creativity, vision and indelible impact on Indian cinema.
