Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – Fly-tipping, also known as illegal dumping or fly dumping, is the act of disposing of waste illegally. This can range from leaving bags of rubbish on the street to dumping large amounts of construction waste in remote areas. Fly-tipping not only creates an eyesore but also poses a significant risk to public health and the environment.

The British recently announced new measures to be introduced in local authorities with grants adding up to £775,000.

The measures are to be put into place in 21 local authorities, which may include roadside CCTV, Barriers and Better waste infrastructure. The most successful measures applied in the local areas are likely to be replicated.

Environment Minister Rebecca Pow says “Fly-tipping is a cynical crime which blights communities and the environment.”

“Our first round of grants over the last year were a big success – which is why we are expanding this scheme to help more local authorities around the country take the fight to waste criminals.”

There are several reasons why people engage in fly-tipping. some people may not be aware of how to dispose of their waste properly, leading them to take matters into their own hands. However, some individuals engage in fly-tipping simply because they disregard the impact their actions have on the environment or their community.

The consequences of fly-tipping can be severe. Firstly, it poses a significant risk to public health. Dumped waste can attract vermin and pests, leading to the spread of disease. Secondly, fly-tipping can have a devastating impact on wildlife and their habitats. Dumped waste can leach harmful chemicals into the soil, pollute waterways and cause significant damage to local ecosystems. Thirdly, fly-tipping can lead to a loss of tourism and economic opportunities in affected areas, as the presence of illegally dumped waste can deter visitors and potential investors.
