Burden of Cancer

-

Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that cancer is the second-leading cause of mortality worldwide in 2020, accounting for 10 million fatalities. Some of the most common types of cancers include lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancers.

Global burden of cancer is predicted to rise as a result of aging, changing lifestyles, and population growth. Low- and middle-income nations, which frequently lack access to effective disease prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment services, proper rehabilitation programs, and quality palliative care services are particularly affected by the burden of cancer.

At present, cancer has become a significant health challenge in Sri Lanka. Cancer has an impact on the nation’s diverse geographic and social landscape, from the busy urban areas to the quiet rural towns. Data from Sri Lanka’s National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) in 2021 indicate that the country’s cancer incidence has been rising. Its rising incidence affects people individually and in families throughout its varied communities. Behind Sri Lanka’s cancer landscape are tales of resiliency, difficulties, and continuous battles against this formidable adversary. Sri Lanka with a population of 22 million people, witness nearly 37,753 new cases of cancer diagnosed in year 2021 with a crude incidence rate (CR) of 170.4 per 100,000 population. Country’s both government and private sector work to provide people the tools they need to take control of their health through public health programs and community outreach. Early detection and screening programs are crucial for improving cancer outcomes. The government has worked to increase the number of cancer treatment facilities and thereby enhance early detection initiatives offering cancer patients free or with discounted care.

It is also noteworthy that there have been significant advances in cancer treatment in recent years. These treatments offer new hope for patients and have improved survival rates for some types of cancer.

Future trends indicate that Sri Lanka would see a sharp increase in the need for cancer care. It is also important to guarantee fair access to facilities that provide specialized cancer care, especially in rural areas.

At the same time, role of caretakers is both significant and crucial. It is imperative to illuminate the critical component of offering consolation and assistance to those facing this challenging times. Ensuring that cancer patients are in a peaceful and soothing environment is critical to their care. Every little thing matters when it comes to the patient’s recovery, from making sure the area is tidy and comfortable to letting in natural light and fresh air.

Another important aspect of a cancer patient’s life is proper nutrition. By providing wholesome meals according to the patient’s requirements and preferences, monitoring dietary recommendations made by medical specialists and making sure the patient drinks enough water fall under the care of the caretakers. While managing medications and providing emotional support, it is vital to create a safe space for patients to express their fears, hopes, and feelings can foster a sense of connection and understanding.
