COMMONWEALTH DAY 2024 – “ONE RESILIENT COMMON FUTURE”

-

Each year, on the second Monday of March, 56 nations around the world come together to observe Commonwealth Day.

This year the Commonwealth day takes place on 11th March and the theme of the Commonwealth day was announced as “One Resilient Common Future” by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC.

In 2024, the Commonwealth not only marks its momentous 75th anniversary but also celebrates the second year of the Year of Youth, acknowledging the remarkable contributions of young people in strengthening the bonds that unite this diverse family of nations.

The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, Commonwealth Secretary-General, in her Commonwealth Day Message stated, “Over the course of 75 years, our family of nations has grown in scale, strength and experience. Our inbuilt relationships are unique and extraordinary, drawing together one third of humanity, across five continents and six oceans, with an astonishing diversity of thought, tradition and experience, and 1.5 billion people under the age of 30. “

The theme of resilience is prominently showcased in the performances from all five regions of the Commonwealth. This year marks another significance to Commonwealth Nations, as the bi-annual Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will also take center stage, as Rwanda passes the Chair-in-Office to Samoa. Set to be held in October, where CHOGM will revolve around the theme “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.”

“The seventy-fifth anniversary of The Commonwealth is a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey that our unique family of free and independent nations has made since 1949” Message from His Majesty The King for the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration.

During Commonwealth Week in March, leaders, foreign ministers, youth advocates, and other delegates from across the Commonwealth will convene for a series of impactful discussions. Together, they will address a wide array of issues and collaborate on collective actions to tackle shared challenges. They will also propose initiatives aimed at empowering individuals, fostering growth, and driving transformative change.

The Commonwealth Day service will feature performances by musicians and groups from Uganda, India, and Samoa. This year, Commonwealth Day events will feature a special contingent of Speakers and Presiding Officers from Commonwealth countries, UK Overseas Territories, Crown Dependencies, and the UK nations. They have been specially invited by the Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, the Speaker of the House of Commons in the UK, to participate in the celebrations.

Commonwealth Secretary-General further mentions in her message, “On this Commonwealth Day, as we prepare to come together again as one Commonwealth family in Samoa for our Heads of Government Meeting later this year, let us draw again from the wells of friendship and mutual respect, encouraging ourselves and inspiring each other to ever-more more profound depths of co-operation and greater heights of achievement.”
