The return of the Commonwealth Games to Scotland is nearly upon us.
This announcement follows a challenging period when the event’s future appeared uncertain. As such, attention across various sports may turn to Scotland’s largest city later this month.
With all the venues & sports confirmed, tickets are now on general sale.
The Games are scheduled to run for 10 days, from Thursday, 23 July, to Sunday, 2 August ’26.
The event’s expected to kick off with an opening ceremony on 23 July at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow.
The following day is expected to see the commencement of sporting action. Baseball and bowling, besides swimming, are among the initial competitions scheduled to get under way.
The 1st medal’s to be awarded in para-powerlifting.
The Games are scheduled to conclude on 2 August. Medals are expected to be awarded in the sport of netball, besides cycling, before a closing ceremony.
This ’26 Games is to be the 23rd edition of the contest, which was initially held over 8 decades back, in 1930.

Venue
It’s the 2nd time that Glasgow’s hosting this competition, with the initial one being 8 years back in ’14.
Glasgow stepped in when the future of the Games appeared to be in limbo following the Australian state of Victoria’s decision to pull out of hosting due to associated costs.
After many months of wrangling, Glasgow were announced as the new host of the Games. The event was in a scaled-down version in September ’24.
Scotland also hosted the Commonwealth Games in the 1970s, in addition to the 1986 Games. These Games were held in Edinburgh.

10 sports are expected to be in this year’s games. This year’s games are expected to include 10 sports. in this year’s Games. That’s a drop of 7 from the total of 17 events in the previous ’14 edition.
This reduction is a reflection of the more cost-effective approach being taken this time. This is with less sport, meaning financial savings.

There was disappointment expressed for the sports that missed out.
These included hockey. This is despite Glasgow having a National Hockey Centre. Also, all racquet sports.
