New Delhi, India (CWBN)_ A policeman carrying out traffic duties was dragged on the bonnet of a car for about half a kilometre by an errant driver attempting to dodge police checking. The driver was chased down and stopped by locals and other policemen, who observed the incident. The incident was filmed by passersby on mobile phones and circulated on social media.

The policeman later filed a complaint, stating that he saw a white car driving in a zigzag manner and signalled it to stop, while he was on duty at Station Road in Delhi Cantonment. As he was checking the car’s documents, the driver suddenly sped off and the policeman tried to stop him by leaping onto the bonnet, holding onto the windshield wipers as the driver swerved dangerously to get rid of him. The driver was arrested for rash driving, obstruction and assault on a policeman.

The question arises whether traffic police need to take measures to halt errant drivers which jeopardises their own safety and that of other commuters, when simply noting down the vehicle registration number and booking the offender later is a more prudent option. Senior police officials have noted there are clear directions that no traffic personnel should endanger their lives in such a manner.
