LONDON (CU)_Buckingham Palace has launched a review of the diversity policies across all Royal Households, following racism allegations made against the British Royal Family, sources have revealed.
The initiative is looking to improve the diversity policies, procedures and programmes currently in place at Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace.
The work began following allegations of racism made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex against the Royal Family. During Megan and Harry’s tell-all TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, the pair claimed that a member of the Firm had raised concerns regarding how dark their son Archie’s skin might be.
Although the pair declined to reveal who voiced such concerns, Winfrey later told CBS that Harry had said it was not the Queen nor her husband Prince Philip.
A few days later, Buckingham Palace issued a statement on behalf of the Queen, in which it was said that the issue of race was particularly “concerning”, and will be taken “very seriously” and be addressed by the family privately.
Later, Prince William said that the Royal Family is “very much not a racist”, in response to a question raised by a reporter.
According to sources, Buckingham Palace is looking at new ways of approaching all issues of diversity within the royal households, and this includes the possibility of appointing a “diversity chief”, although it is “too early” to announce any “firm plans.”
“Lots of measures are being considered. Certainly, the idea of someone to spearhead this work and look at diversity / inclusion across the three households is something that has to be considered,” the source said. “It is too early however for any firm plans to be announced. We are listening and learning, to get this right.”
Royal sources further noted that the Royal Family has a strong track record on diversity through their charity initiatives and engagements, but added the whole family has given their full support to this project.
