Dubois Crumbles After Last-Minute Chaos — Was It All Too Much?

Sports (Commonwealth Union) _ Following Daniel Dubois‘ defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, concerns have been raised over the British boxer’s preparation, or lack thereof, ahead of his heavyweight title bout on Saturday. Dubois’ team has confirmed that an internal review will be conducted to assess the events leading up to his fifth-round decline, including a controversial pre-fight gathering that was allegedly held at his home just hours before the fight.

The 27-year-old arrived at Wembley Stadium less than two hours before his scheduled ring walk, far later than what is generally considered standard for a high-stakes title fight. While his camp downplayed the timing, critics and fans have pointed to the late arrivals and disorganised atmosphere as symptoms of an underlying issue.

Trainer Don Charles acknowledged that more than 30 people had attended Dubois’ residence earlier that day. However, he insisted the event was not a “party,” but rather a motivational gathering and a repetition of what they claim worked successfully ahead of Dubois’ confident victory over Anthony Joshua last year.

However, the anticipated energy failed to materialise on Saturday, with Dubois being knocked down twice in the fifth round by Usyk, who reasserted his dominance and became a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

Reports suggested that the venue denied entry to some members of Dubois’ entourage, potentially contributing to his late arrival. Charles said he was unaware of the issue but dismissed any suggestion that Dubois was unsettled, stating that he had “90 minutes to prepare him — the duration of a football game — and I was satisfied.”

Nevertheless, the pre-fight chaos has prompted promoter Frank Warren and his son George to schedule a debriefing with Dubois’ team, along with an anticipated internal inquest.

Some reports have suggested the gathering was organised by Dubois’ father, Stan, who allegedly attempted to replicate the same conditions that led to past successes. Charles offered a defence of the logic of the action and stated that the mass attention directed towards the gathering had been caused by its failure to have the expected effect on the boxer.

It’s also claimed that Dubois briefly left the event to go for a drive, which many reportedly interpreted as a sign of emotional stress. However, his trainer pushed back against the narrative, saying that it was not unusual for the British boxer to get some fresh air by going on a drive.

Tension in the corner was also visible during the fight, with Dubois’ father being seen speaking from the apron during the session, a move that seemed to cause confusion. Charles defended the moment as another example of their unconventional but previously effective system: “That’s a ‘mess’ — to use their word — that got us victory against Miller, Hrgovic, Joshua. I don’t remember anybody bringing that up when we won.”

The incident isn’t the first time Dubois has been placed under scrutiny for his performances under pressure. His losses to Joe Joyce and Usyk (in their 2023 bout) both met with claims of “quitting,” accusations his trainer firmly rejects. “He went out on his sword,” Charles insisted. “He took a horrible punch and made the count. The referee waved it off. I’d already thrown the towel in anyway.  didn’t want any more for him.”

Despite the defeat, Usyk was credited as “an all-time great”, and he praised Dubois for his courage. He emphasised that the team’s focus is now on recovery and reflection rather than blame.

“The internal inquest is to make sure we learn,” Charles added. “We’ve had big nights before, and we’ll have them again.”

It remains to be seen whether Dubois can recover from this loss and re-establish himself as a force in the heavyweight division, but his team is adamant that Saturday’s setback is not the end of his career.
