NIGERIA (Commonwealth Union) – There has been a lot of natural disasters happening all over the world these days. Of course, this comes back to the discussion of climate change. However, that’s not what’s on topic right now. We see that there have been freak rains in Nigeria which have then in turn caused flash floods.

Now floods are never a good thing unless one speaks on two or three inches on water. But the floods that hit Nigeria were not two or three inches of water causing inconvenience. No, these were flash flood which caused mass damage to the entire country.

The government officials sought out the damage it had done, where they found death and devastation everywhere the flood hit. They official numbers were that there are up to 1,427,370 people that were internally displaced.  This meant that there has to be over time work done to make sure these people have safe spaces and places to stay until they could be relocated back to where they live, if that is even possible after the wreckage has been looked into.

There are approximately 2,776 people who have sustained injuries. The hospitals that are not damaged will now have to make sure that all these people receive the proper medical care, as the death toll will rise if people succumb to their injuries.

The number of deaths caused by the floods is 612. There have not been reports as to the breakdown like to say how many women men and children, but the number alone is high enough. Sadiya Umar Farouq who is the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster management and Social Development came out and made the statement that she and her team are working around the clock to make sure that the people who need immediate attention and care are receiving it.
