(Commonwealth_ DP World is launching a six-month carbon insetting trial at its London Gateway and Southampton terminals in the UK, starting on January 1, 2025. This initiative aims to provide importers with verified carbon credits to encourage sustainable practices and reduce supply chain emissions.
Carbon Credits for Importers
During the trial, importers will receive 50 kg of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) carbon credits for every loaded import container handled through DP World’s UK terminals. Unlike traditional carbon offsetting programs, these credits are part of a carbon insetting initiative and are generated within the company’s supply chain by Unifeeder, a DP World group company. Unifeeder’s contributions to this program stem from its efforts to decarbonize its North European feeder network. These include the adoption of lower-carbon fuels, such as biofuels; improvements in fleet energy efficiency; and plans to deploy methanol-capable vessels starting in 2026.
What is Carbon Insetting?
Carbon insetting involves reducing emissions within a company’s own operations or supply chain, as opposed to carbon offsetting, which supports external decarbonization projects unrelated to a company’s activities.
