(Commonwealth_ The UK’s Grain LNG import terminal has made history by becoming the first facility of its kind to receive emissions certification from MiQ, a leading company in emissions verification. This marks a significant step forward in the drive for transparency and environmental accountability within the natural gas sector, both in the UK and the European Union. Grain LNG, located just east of London and managed by the UK’s National Grid, plays a crucial role in the country’s energy infrastructure and is currently undergoing expansion to meet up to 33% of the UK’s gas demand.
MiQ specializes in verifying methane emissions and currently certifies 20% of US natural gas production. The certification of Grain LNG offers European and UK buyers of US-sourced liquefied natural gas (LNG) a clearer view of the environmental impact of their imports. This transparency is particularly important as both the UK and EU ramp up efforts to reduce methane emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases. By providing verified emissions data, MiQ’s certification helps ensure that importers and consumers can make more informed choices about the environmental footprint of the energy they use.
Grain LNG’s certification is especially timely, given the increasing scrutiny on emissions and the growing need for cleaner energy solutions. Georges Tijbosch, the chief executive of MiQ, highlighted the significance of this achievement, noting that more facilities across Europe are likely to seek similar certification soon. He also emphasized the importance of emissions transparency in the global energy market, predicting the arrival of the first certified LNG cargo from the US to Europe before the year’s end.
This development follows the announcement of a pilot project in September, in which US natural gas producer EQT and German trader Uniper participated in a certified LNG transaction. This project demonstrated the potential for full supply-chain emissions reporting, a crucial component of the European Union’s new methane regulations. These regulations aim to address methane leaks and emissions across the energy sector, with a focus on improving sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of natural gas.
Ben Wilson, president of National Grid Ventures, emphasized the importance of Grain LNG’s role as a leader in methane emissions management. He stated that this new accreditation showcases the terminal’s commitment to operating as a highly efficient and market-leading facility. By being proactive on methane emissions, Grain LNG has positioned itself at the forefront of the energy transition, where reducing the environmental impact of fossil fuel operations is critical to achieving long-term sustainability goals.
Simon Culkin, managing director of Grain LNG, expressed pride in the terminal’s achievement. He acknowledged the growing focus on emissions reduction and noted that the certification is a significant milestone for the port. According to Culkin, Grain LNG’s certification is a testament to the diversity of its customers and operations, as well as the facility’s new focus on methane management. This certification not only confirms Grain LNG’s status as the largest LNG port in Europe but also highlights the importance of reducing methane emissions in the natural gas industry.
As one of the largest LNG terminals in Europe, Grain LNG serves as a vital energy hub, supporting the UK’s energy security while also contributing to the broader European energy market. The certification by MiQ reinforces the facility’s reputation for operational excellence and environmental stewardship. The expansion of the terminal will enhance its ability to meet a significant portion of the UK’s gas demand, ensuring a stable energy supply and addressing the critical issue of emissions reduction.
