Canada _ (Commonwealth Union) _ According to Public Health Sudbury and Districts, over the course of many months, up to 40 people could have acquired used syringes from a needle exchange program in Sudbury, Ontario. The group Réseau ACCESS Network, which oversees the needle exchange program for harm reduction, notified public health about the problem, according to Jonathan Groulx, the manager of health protection for the health unit.

According to Groulx, “We feel the danger to be very, very low, but it’s something that we still still take very seriously and we are working very closely with Réseau ACCESS Network on it.” Groulx made this statement in an interview with Radio-Canada.

Despite the fact that the inquiry is still ongoing, Groulx said Réseau ACCESS Network had a procedure in place “that didn’t guard access to clean syringes and allowed. The supervised consumption facility in Sudbury, which allows medical personnel to watch over drug users and avoid overdoses, is likewise run by Réseau ACCESS Network. According to Groulx, the used syringes were unrelated to that location.

Records suggest that over 40 people may have been impacted during that period since it used a particular kind of syringe that wasn’t as widely used as some other kinds. “Those people are being aggressively engaged,” Groulx said. “We’re giving them information and testing choices.” Bloodborne illnesses like HIV and hepatitis C can be spread via used needles. Réseau ACCESS Network’s executive director, Heidi Eisenhauer, stated in a press statement that they have provided testing and advice to reduce risk for all those who may be impacted by the safety lapse.

“The agency has taken quick steps to alert everyone who has possibly been exposed to the hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), to promote testing, and to give help to anyone who may need it,” she added. Until sterilized, pre-packaged needles are available, the organization noted, it has halted the distribution of individual needles.
