British schools to counter Holocaust mistruths and antisemitism

-

Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – Holocaust education has played a crucial role in ensuring that future generations remain aware of the tragic sequence of events that unfolded during the holocaust. The active engagement of Holocaust museums and Holocaust survivors in creating awareness has been an important part of countering misunderstandings related to the Holocaust in the past.

Schools in Britain will soon receive teacher training and educational resources on the Holocaust as part of a new partnership involving the University College London (UCL) and 2 leading multi-academy trusts (MATs) in England.

The new partnership involving the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, Star Academies and Outwood Grange Academy Trust (OGAT) is part of a renewed effort in eliminating mistruths and confusion regarding the Holocaust in schools across England and to counter the increase in antisemitism in recent times.

Schools and teachers will be engaged with both MATs, the initiative will see 1000s of Key Stage 3 pupils educated on the Holocaust, its lasting effects as well as the various prejudices, misunderstandings and falsehoods that have been seen more frequently in the recent past.

The initiative was announced at an event this month while celebrating 10 years of the Centre’s landmark Beacon Schools programme, impacting over 2,000 schools via Beacon networks, with more than 1.6 million students benefitting year on year with the teachers’ professional development.

Sir Martyn Oliver the CEO of OGAT says “We are delighted to work with The UCL Centre for Holocaust Education in developing skilled and knowledgeable teachers who can deliver a high-quality curriculum supported by some of the country’s foremost experts.  We are also delighted to have recently appointed Lord John Mann, the government’s independent advisor on antisemitism, as a Trustee of OGAT, as we look forward to providing our children with the knowledge they need to be respectful and well-rounded citizens who can tackle discrimination in all its forms.”
